About

Philosophy

Historically informed research and careful observation shape the way I encounter objects, whether they are estate sourced pieces from the Virginia countryside, regional material culture of the Mid-Atlantic, or antiques found at European markets.

My philosophy of sourcing with discernment means that the age, collectability, or prestige of an object is not the only thing that draws my attention. I am also drawn in by another type of rarity—the human connections, meanings, and evidence that objects can hold. This approach allows Rare & Respair to source objects for the history, character, craftsmanship, and sense of place they can bring to a project.

Areas of Expertise

European and British Isles decorative arts, American Mid-Atlantic and New England material culture, domestic objects, folk art, paper ephemera, and architectural salvage.

How it works

Project Scoping

  • Intake questionnaire and photo review of existing spaces, objects, and furniture

  • Consultation (virtual or in the Rare & Respair studio) to discuss goals, constraints, aesthetic direction, timeline, and sourcing budget

  • Contract is agreed upon and accepted

Curatorial Service Fee & Object Budget

A non-refundable curatorial service fee is required to reserve dedicated research and sourcing time. An object budget appropriate to the scope is determined during the initial consultation. Both payments are invoiced after project scoping is complete.

Sourcing & Selection

Rare & Respair independently acquires objects that fall within the agreed upon project parameters and object budget. The object budget functions as an acquisition reserve and is used to acquire objects; any unused balance will be refunded following the final presentation.

Deliverable

Following sourcing, you will receive a curated collection of objects selected specifically for your project and presented together by appointment in the Rare & Respair studio in Aldie, Virginia. You are invited to experience the collection as a whole and may decline individual pieces that do not feel right for your space or vision.

After the presentation, the object budget is reconciled. The value of any declined objects, along with any remaining unused funds, is returned to you.

Select pieces may include object history documentation exploring historical context, maker evidence, regional traditions, construction methods, and known provenance.
