Heavy Wool Camping Blanket | WWII Era Throw

$95.00

This vintage wool blanket carries the traces of two very different chapters: its likely origins as a WWII-era military camp blanket, followed by a later life as a personal summer camp blanket.

The dense, heathered wool is scattered with tiny white and black fibers, characteristic of military-era blankets produced during the enormous material demands of World War II. Wool supplies were stretched during the period, and recycled or reprocessed fibers—sometimes referred to as “shoddy”—were incorporated into many utility textiles. The blanket's durable construction reflects the practical demands of military use, including industrial laundering and repeated handling.

A small cotton muslin tag remains sewn into one corner, although any original writing or identifying marks have completely faded. The blanket also carries a later, much more personal trace: the surname “Bell” has been hand embroidered in red thread into one corner, presumably when the blanket was purchased from a surplus source and brought along to summer camp. This small addition transforms an otherwise anonymous utilitarian textile into an object with evidence of individual ownership and use.

The blanket's overlock serged edges were designed for durability, while the substantial wool construction makes it both practical and atmospheric. Today, it could continue its utilitarian life as a camp blanket for cool evenings around a fire pit, an outdoor throw for a porch or garden, or a cozy layer in a lodge or cabin-inspired interior.
